Lulu Da Costa
Originally from Brazil, Lulu moved to London in 2017 to study a Foundation in Art and Design followed by a bachelor in Design Studio Practice at London Metropolitan University. Half way through her degree she accidentally walked into the ceramic workshop and never looked back.
In 2021 Lulu relocated to Dorset and after living in Bournemouth for 6 months she found her way to Weymouth where she met the master potter Bill Crumbleholme and joined his Tuesday evening pottery gatherings in Upwey.
''Bill introduced me to a completely different approach to pottery and ceramic firing. Being a stone age researcher and enthusiast, Bill relies on ancient methods of firing, specially a wood fired kiln.''
Wood fired kiln is a slow and often communal process that can take up to 40 hours of constant attention and fuelling of the kiln resulting in a high fired and heavily reduced pottery that is burnished by the ashes and flames of the fire.
''My main inspiration comes from the actual process rather than solely what I envision as the result. During the fire each piece must stand on a seashell to avoid sticking to the kiln shelf - that leaves a mark on the pot which I'm fascinated by so I try to enhance those imprints. Same with the contrast between glazed and unglazed parts of the pots - anything left unglazed transforms into a rich shiny brown .''
