Cove Gallery is a thriving, independent and well-loved art gallery located on Weymouth’s beautiful south harbourside.

We are now looking for a suitable person to work alongside the owners, a husband-and-wife team, to help run the gallery.

This is an exciting role for an enthusiastic, friendly, approachable person who has the all-round skills and experience to make a meaningful contribution to the business.

A genuine love of art and a proven ability to sell are critical to the role, along with excellent communication skills and an ability to interpret the needs of our customers.

Description of the Position

The primary duty of the Gallery Associate is to effectively assist the owners in managing all gallery operations.

This is a wide-ranging role requiring mental agility and the ability to effectively multitask in a busy customer-orientated environment.

General duties include but are not limited to:

  • Meet, greet, and assist customers in selecting purchases of artwork including ceramics, glass, bronze and gift items.
  • Package customer purchases for safe onward travel.
  • Identify opportunities for artist commissions, facilitating communication between the artist and the customer as appropriate.
  • Handle and process cash and card sales, lay away deposits, sales refunds and exchanges.
  • Keep up to date with product and supplier knowledge, including the gallery website, and provide advice to customers accordingly.
  • Keep gallery walls and shelves organised and fully replenished, and maintain shop and window displays.
  • Ensure all gallery merchandise is accurately labelled and priced.
  • Keep up the general maintenance and cleanliness of the gallery and gallery storage room.
  • Receive deliveries, process inventory, and receive artworks and products from artists and suppliers.
  • Effectively deal with suppliers/customers regarding incorrect orders, broken products etc.
  • As appropriate, direct customers towards the Own Art interest free finance scheme.
  • Handle telephone enquiries and deal with online orders.
  • Assist in periodic stocktaking exercises.

Skills & Experience

  • Previous experience in a customer service and/or retail environment.
  • Ability to engage with customers, maintaining a ‘sales orientated’ focus.
  • Knowledge of retail point-of-sale systems, card machines and other payment methods.
  • Ability to accurately handle cash and work with numbers.
  • Experience of ordering and receiving inventory and dealing with suppliers.
  • Ability to set up and operate front-of-house office equipment, email programmes and other software applications
  • Be able to communicate clearly and effectively, and to be positive, polite, and co-operative with suppliers and customers.
  • Demonstrable commitment to the highest standards of customer service.
  • Ability to work under pressure, and to maintain diplomacy, tact, and courtesy at all times.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to work independently and also as a member of a team.

Other Requirements

  • Availability to work weekends and bank holidays.
  • Comfortable working in a business that has a highly seasonal trading year
